Curriculum Overview

Summer Curriculum Overview for Year 5

Summer Term

Welcome to the Summer Term in Year 5! We have an exciting and busy term ahead, filled with engaging learning opportunities, new experiences and plenty of chances for the children to develop their skills, confidence and creativity across the curriculum.

Reading

This term in our reading sessions, we will be exploring the texts Wonder, The Explorer, Arctic Star and The Journey. Through these engaging stories, the children will develop a range of reading skills including:

  • elaborating on thoughts, feelings, opinions and predictions using evidence from the text
  • exploring how a text affects the reader
  • locating and retrieving key information
  • identifying different points of view
  • discussing how authors build character
  • reading between the lines using clues and inference.

Writing

This term in our writing sessions, we will be exploring a range of exciting text types linked to our wider curriculum learning. We will begin by writing a biography about Floella Benjamin as part of our Early Black Britons topic, learning about the Windrush generation and its importance in British history. A news journalist will also be visiting us to teach the children how news stories are created and the key features needed to engage the reader, before we write our own newspaper reports about endangered cubs being born. Using our science learning on plants, we will then write explanation texts about the life cycle of a plant. Finally, after reading Shackleton's Journey, the children will write persuasive letters applying to become part of Ernest Shackleton’s crew.

Mathematics

In maths this term we are visiting each of the various strands, some of which are number and place value, where children need to be secure with reading numbers into the millions; geometry, where children are aiming to secure their understanding of 2D and 3D shape names and develop their skills when using the four main operations (+ - X ÷) In addition to this, the children will also be applying their knowledge of fractions, decimals, percentages and measurements to real-life, problem-solving contexts.

As we are visiting these areas, the children will be expected to be developing a sense of mastery towards them, being able to look at problems in a variety of ways, including carrying out independent investigations. The areas of maths over-lap, giving the children regular opportunities to develop and apply their understanding frequently throughout the term.

We will start to focus on arithmetic every day and as the children begin to master the concepts, they will begin to independently choose the most efficient methods. Times tables are also a priority, being practised regularly.

History

Black histories are a vital part of England's story, reaching back many centuries. The children will be learning about the Windrush Generation and their contribution to the workforce since 1945. We will also be looking at the significant social and cultural impact on British society that the Windrush generation, and their descendants, have made.

Geography

This term in Geography, the children will develop their map-reading and navigation skills through a range of practical activities. They will learn why latitude and longitude are important for locating places around the world, as well as how to read and interpret 4 and 6 figure grid references. The children will also practise locating different landmarks on maps and develop an understanding of contour lines, exploring how they show height and terrain and why they are useful tools for walkers and explorers.

Computing

Year 5 will be developing their coding skills using Purple Mash. Pupils will explore more advanced computing concepts, including simulations, decomposition, abstraction and functions. Through practical projects and problem-solving activities, children will learn how to break down complex tasks into manageable steps and create efficient programs.

Science

This term in Science, the children will explore the similarities and differences between animals and plants through a range of investigations and discussions. They will learn about how seeds germinate and the conditions needed for healthy growth, as well as the functions of different parts of a plant and the stages of a plant’s life cycle. The children will also study the main stages of the human life cycle, including the development of a human foetus, and compare the gestational periods of different mammals to deepen their understanding of growth and reproduction in living things.

RW

In Religion and Worldviews, the children will focus on Christianity through a range of enquiry-based questions and discussions. They will learn about who the first Christians were and explore how the Bible has helped Christianity spread around the world. The children will investigate why churches can look different from one another and learn about the beliefs and worship of Quakers. They will also explore how Christians celebrate Easter and examine the different ways Christians put their faith into action in their everyday lives and communities.

Music

We are working with specialist teachers from BYMT to provide children with some outstanding music teaching.  The children will take part in a rolling programme consisting of class ukulele and music technology where they will learn to play the keyboard. The objective is to provide a continuum of study, giving students the opportunity to further develop their musical skills on various instruments.

PE

This term in PE, the children will take part in a range of exciting sporting activities designed to develop teamwork, coordination and fitness. They will build their skills in athletics, cricket and rounders through a variety of games and challenges. With Sports Day fast approaching, the children will have the opportunity to apply and showcase the skills they have been practising throughout the term.

Art

This term in Art, the children will explore a range of famous art periods throughout history and learn to recognise different artistic styles, paintings and techniques. They will study techniques such as Sfumato and Pointillism, investigating how artists used them to create different effects. The children will then practise these techniques themselves by recreating and producing their own pieces of artwork inspired by well-known artists.

D.T.

This term in DT, the children will focus on bread making and will have the opportunity to design and bake their own bread by the end of term. They will learn about the ingredients used to make bread and how they are processed, as well as explore the different food groups that contribute to a healthy, balanced diet. The children will investigate the nutritional content of different foods before creating their own bread recipe, which they will then make, taste and evaluate.
